Cantina Chicken vs Regular Chicken: What's Different?

A TacoBellMenuOnline guide — every figure below comes from our dataset of sampled prices and published nutrition (compiled October 2026).

For years Taco Bell had one chicken: marinated, grilled, the chicken in the quesadillas and burritos. In March 2024 it added a second — Cantina Chicken, slow-roasted with a savoury seasoning of Mexican spices including garlic, onions and a variety of chilies, in Brand Eating's description of the launch. It was the first second chicken option since the shredded chicken was discontinued in 2020. The two chickens now anchor two different menus, and the comparison is in the cooking, the panels and the price.

How they are different

Cooking. Cantina Chicken is slow-roasted; the standard chicken is marinated and grilled. The slow roast is the flavour difference — the seasoning (garlic, onions, chilies) is cooked into the meat rather than applied as a marinade, and the chicken reads as a roast rather than a grill.

Where they live. Cantina Chicken has its own menu section — tacos, burritos, quesadillas, bowls and nacho fries — while the standard chicken lives in the general menu (the Chicken Quesadilla is the flagship). The Cantina line also carries the Avocado Verde Salsa packet ($0.29 sampled), the line's signature sauce.

Calories and protein. Matched as closely as the menu allows: the Cantina Chicken Soft Taco is 210 calories with 12g protein at $3.19 sampled; the Chicken Quesadilla is 510 calories with 26g protein at $5.89. The Cantina Chicken Burrito is 540 calories, 25g protein, $6.29; the Cantina Chicken Quesadilla 570 calories, 29g protein, $6.99. The Cantina builds run richer — more calories per dollar — because the slow-roasted chicken comes with more cheese and sauce in the build, not because the chicken itself is heavier.

Which to order

Order Cantina Chicken when the chicken is the point — the soft taco is the cleanest taste of it, 210 calories and the cheapest way in. Order the standard chicken when the build is the point: the Chicken Quesadilla is the better quesadilla, and the regular menu's chicken items are cheaper across the board. The Caliente line (the spicy Cantina variant) is the third option, for heat rather than for chicken: the Caliente Cantina Chicken Soft Taco is 200 calories with the same slow-roasted base.

About this guide's data

Every figure in this guide comes from one dataset: sampled Taco Bell prices and published nutrition, compiled and verified in October 2026 (prices are re-checked monthly, and every data page carries its verification stamp). Rankings state their rule in the open and are computed from those rows — never voted on, never estimated. Where a value is missing it is shown as missing, and each named item links to its own page, where the full label, allergen record and sampled price range can be checked. Prices vary by location; nutrition values are the published figures for the standard build.
