Nacho Fries are three things done right: fries fried until properly crisp, a five-spice seasoning applied the second they leave the oil, and a smooth nacho cheese sauce for dipping. The timing matters more than the ingredients — season within seconds of draining, while the fries are still hot, or the spice brushes straight off. This is our own home version — an inspired copycat, not Taco Bell's recipe. The original's numbers are the benchmark below.

Ingredients

Method

  1. Mix the seasoning. Combine the paprika, salt, chili powder, garlic powder and onion powder in a small bowl. A spice grinder makes a finer powder that sticks better; without one, mix well by hand.
  2. Make the cheese sauce. Combine the butter, milk, American cheese and jalapeño sauce in a small pot and heat on low, stirring, until the cheese melts and the sauce is smooth. Keep warm.
  3. Fry the fries. Fill a deep pot with oil to about 10cm and heat to 175°C. Fry the fries in batches for 6–8 minutes until golden and crispy, then drain on a wire rack over a baking tray.
  4. Season immediately. Sprinkle the fries liberally with the seasoning blend within seconds of pulling them from the oil — the coating sets fast.
  5. Serve. Plate the seasoned fries hot, with the warm nacho cheese sauce in a small bowl for dipping.

Serving size & prep time

Makes 4 servings as a side or snack. Prep about 10 minutes; cooking about 15 minutes. An air fryer works for a lighter version — cook the fries per the packet, then season the same way.

Nutrition — the honest version

The restaurant's Nacho Fries are 330 calories with 19g fat, 770mg sodium, 36g carbohydrates and 4g protein. We do not publish a summed homemade total. The ingredients vary by brand and portion — the frying oil, the cheese quantity and the seasoning all move the total — so any figure we printed would be an estimate. Cook against the original's panel above: the build to match is the crisp fry, the five-spice dusting and the smooth cheese sauce. The copycat recipes hub has the seasoned-beef spice mix for the loaded version.

About this guide's data

Every figure in this guide comes from one dataset: sampled Taco Bell prices and published nutrition, compiled and verified in October 2026 (prices are re-checked monthly, and every data page carries its verification stamp). Rankings state their rule in the open and are computed from those rows — never voted on, never estimated. Where a value is missing it is shown as missing, and each named item links to its own page, where the full label, allergen record and sampled price range can be checked. Prices vary by location; nutrition values are the published figures for the standard build.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories are in homemade Nacho Fries?

We don't publish a summed homemade total — the ingredients vary by brand and portion. The restaurant's Nacho Fries are 330 calories, and a home build with the same seasoning and cheese sauce lands in the same ballpark.

When do I season the fries?

Within seconds of pulling them from the oil, while they are still hot — the coating sets fast, and once the fries cool the spice just brushes off.

What is in the seasoning?

Paprika, salt, chili powder, garlic powder and onion powder. Do not use garlic salt or onion salt — the blend already carries its own salt.

Is this the exact Taco Bell recipe?

No — this is an inspired copycat. Taco Bell does not publish its recipes; this version recreates the build (crisp fries, five-spice seasoning, cheese sauce) at home.
