Taco Bell's menu did not arrive all at once. It accumulated over six decades: a taco stand in Downey in 1962, a slow build through the 1980s and 1990s, then a run of inventions in the 2000s that still define the board today. This is the dated record — what launched, when, and what stuck.
1962–1984: the foundation
The first Taco Bell opened on 21 March 1962 in Downey, California. The first franchise followed in 1964, the 100th restaurant in 1967, and the company went public in 1970 with 325 restaurants. PepsiCo bought the chain in 1978, when it had 868 restaurants. The 1980s added the first menu architecture beyond tacos: the Taco Salad and the Taco Bellgrande arrived in 1984.
The 1990s: burritos, gorditas and a corporate shuffle
The 7-Layer Burrito launched in 1993 — the same year the Enchirito was dropped from the menu. Gorditas arrived in 1998, giving the chain its flatbread format. Behind the counter, PepsiCo spun the restaurants out as Tricon in October 1997; Tricon became Yum! Brands in May 2002.
The 2000s: the inventions that stuck
Mountain Dew Baja Blast launched in 2004 as a Taco Bell exclusive, and it is still the chain's signature drink. The Crunchwrap Supreme was introduced on 22 June 2005 and made permanent on 30 January 2006 after selling 51 million units in its first six weeks — the single most consequential menu launch in the chain's history. Doritos Locos Tacos followed in 2012, and the Bell Beefer — a 1970s taco-burger hybrid — came back the same year after a run from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s.
2014–2018: breakfast, value and fries
Breakfast went nationwide in 2014, the same year the Dollar Cravings menu launched. The first Cantina restaurant opened in 2015. The Quesalupa arrived in 2016, and Nacho Fries in 2018, alongside the Cravings Value Menu that replaced Dollar Cravings. The value ladder kept evolving: the Luxe Value Menu launched in January 2026.
The 2013 horse-meat incident
On 1 March 2013 the UK Food Standards Agency found horse DNA above the 1% threshold in Taco Bell's UK beef; the Guardian reported levels up to 10%. The chain withdrew the affected beef in the UK. It remains the sharpest food-safety episode in the brand's history, and the full account is on our brand history page.
The Enchirito's comebacks
Dropped in 1993, the Enchirito returned in 2013, then again in short runs in 2022 and 2023 — the pattern for Taco Bell's retired items: they rarely stay retired, and the fan campaigns that bring them back are now part of the menu cycle.
About this guide's data
Every figure in this guide comes from one dataset: sampled Taco Bell prices and published nutrition, compiled and verified in October 2026 (prices are re-checked monthly, and every data page carries its verification stamp). Rankings state their rule in the open and are computed from those rows — never voted on, never estimated. Where a value is missing it is shown as missing, and each named item links to its own page, where the full label, allergen record and sampled price range can be checked. Prices vary by location; nutrition values are the published figures for the standard build.
