Naked Chicken Chalupa: History, Returns & Price

The Naked Chicken Chalupa is Taco Bell's most-returned limited item: a chalupa with no tortilla at all, where the shell itself is fried chicken. It has come back four times since 2017, most recently in the August 2026 Decades throwback menu at $5.99 — and that return has now ended, so this page is a history, not a menu listing. If it is on the board at your store, it is a local leftover, not a national item.

What it is

The build is the gimmick and the whole point: a crispy all-white-meat chicken shell, marinated in Mexican-inspired spices, filled with cheddar cheese, lettuce, diced tomatoes and creamy Avocado Ranch Sauce. No tortilla, no flatbread — the chicken is the container. Allergens: eggs, milk and wheat. At 430 calories and 19g of protein it is lighter than it looks, but at 1,180mg of sodium it is still more than half a day's reference intake in one handheld.

The returns, dated

The Chalupa was tested in Kansas City in 2016, went nationwide in 2017 as a limited-time item, came back briefly in 2018, and returned nationwide in May 2021. The latest return was the Decades #TBTB menu: nationwide from August 20 to September 16, 2026, at $5.99, with the Beefy Crunch Burrito in the same throwback line. It was also the filling of the $9 Discovery Luxe Box in that window — with a Cheesy Bean and Rice Burrito, a Crunchy Taco, Chips & Nacho Cheese Sauce and a medium drink. No October 2026 sighting of availability was found in this run's checks, and the Decades menu was a limited-time programme: the return has ended. What to order instead

The crispy-chicken handhelds that are current are the Crispy Chicken Taco and Burrito, launched June 17, 2026 — with Spicy Ranchero or Avocado Ranch sauces — and the Diablo Ranch Crispy Chicken Crunchwrap Slider. Neither is the same build (both have tortillas; neither uses a chicken shell), but they are the chicken handhelds on the board now. The Naked Chicken Chalupa's pattern is a return every few years, so the honest expectation is another limited window, not a permanent listing — and this page will be updated if one is announced.
