On August 13, 2020, Taco Bell made a major menu revamp that removed a swathe of items at once, including three of the most-loved items on the menu. The backlash was immediate, the returns were slow, and some of the items have never come back. This is the purge as our archive documents it — every item below has a dated removal record, and every calorie figure is the item's published panel.

August 13, 2020: the main cut

The August revamp (Nation's Restaurant News) took out the 7-Layer Burrito — on the menu since 1993 — the Beefy Fritos Burrito, the Mini Skillet Bowl, the Mexican Pizza, the Cheesy Fiesta Potatoes, the Spicy Tostada and the Quesarito from in-store menus. The logic, as the chain explained it at the time, was simplification: fewer items, faster kitchens, a menu built around the items that sold. The cost was the vegetarian core of the menu — the 7-Layer Burrito and the potatoes were the two items vegetarians ordered most, and their removal mobilised vegetarian communities in a way no other cut did.

November 2020: the shredded-chicken line goes

Three months later the shredded-chicken line went with it (Greatist): the Shredded Chicken Burrito and the Shredded Chicken Mini Quesadilla, both 180–420 calories, both gone without a return. November 2020 is the purge's second wave, and the one nobody campaigned to reverse — the shredded-chicken items had fans, but not an organised one.

What came back

The potatoes came back first, in 2021, after the vegetarian backlash made them the purge's symbol. The Mexican Pizza followed in 2022 — the most famous return in the chain's history, driven by a fan campaign loud enough that the chain brought it back permanently. The 7-Layer Burrito waited longest: a brief return on the Decades Y2K menu in 2025, its first time back since the purge. The full throwback story — every Decades return, with prices — is the Decades menus guide.

What is still gone

The Beefy Fritos Burrito, the Mini Skillet Bowl, the Spicy Tostada and both shredded-chicken items have no return in our record — and the Spicy Tostada has no archive panel in our dataset at all, so it is listed here without a calorie figure rather than with a guessed one. The Quesarito survives in our archive with its 570-calorie panel but no current sampled price, a reminder that "discontinued" at Taco Bell has always meant "not on the board" rather than "forgotten." The general discontinued list, with every archived item, is the discontinued-items guide.

About this guide's data

Every figure in this guide comes from one dataset: sampled Taco Bell prices and published nutrition, compiled and verified in October 2026 (prices are re-checked monthly, and every data page carries its verification stamp). Rankings state their rule in the open and are computed from those rows — never voted on, never estimated. Where a value is missing it is shown as missing, and each named item links to its own page, where the full label, allergen record and sampled price range can be checked. Prices vary by location; nutrition values are the published figures for the standard build.

Frequently asked questions

What did Taco Bell remove in 2020?

The August 13, 2020 revamp cut the 7-Layer Burrito, Beefy Fritos Burrito, Mini Skillet Bowl, Mexican Pizza, Cheesy Fiesta Potatoes, Spicy Tostada and the Quesarito from in-store menus; the shredded-chicken items followed in November 2020.

Did the Mexican Pizza come back?

Yes — in 2022, after a fan campaign, and it is on the menu now at $5.84 sampled. The Cheesy Fiesta Potatoes returned in 2021; the 7-Layer Burrito had a brief Decades Y2K return in 2025.

Why did Taco Bell remove so many items in 2020?

Simplification: fewer items for faster kitchens. The cost was the vegetarian core of the menu — the 7-Layer Burrito and the potatoes were the items vegetarians ordered most, and their removal drew organised pushback.
