In 1962, a Taco Bell taco cost 19 cents. In 2026, the Crunchy Taco — the closest thing to that original taco — is sampled at $2.09 on this site. Adjusted for inflation, those 19 cents are $2.07 in February 2026 dollars, which means the taco has risen by about two cents in real terms in 64 years. That is the long story. The short story is less comfortable: between 2024 and 2026, most core items rose 15–30%, and the Beefy 5-Layer Burrito rose 39%. This page is both stories, with every figure labelled by year and source — including three verified 1990s prices from the 59-79-99 value menu, which are the only 90s per-item figures this run could source.

1962: nineteen cents

Taco Bell's first tacos sold for 19 cents in 1962 (Money Digest). The chain's founder, Glen Bell, had noticed that sit-down Mexican restaurants were slow and expensive, and that a pre-fried shell filled to order could be fast and cheap. At 19 cents the taco undercut McDonald's hamburgers (about 20 cents) and cheeseburgers (about 25 cents) of the same era. Fast-forward to 2026: Money Digest puts the Crunchy Taco at $2.19, and this site's sampled price is $2.09 (range $1.99–$2.49) — two different samples, both labelled. The inflation maths is the striking part: 19 cents in 1962 is $2.07 in February 2026 dollars, so the taco's real price has barely moved in six decades. What changed is everything around it: the menu went from a handful of tacos to 322 distinct items, and the value moved from the single taco to the boxes.

2024–2026: the two-year table

Taco Bell core-item prices, 2024 vs 2026 — menupriceguide archived comparison (Oct 2026)
Item20242026Increase
Crunchy Taco$2.02$2.49+23%
Soft Taco$2.26$2.49+10%
Crunchy Taco Supreme$2.86$3.79+32%
Cheesy Gordita Crunch$5.14$5.99+17%
Chalupa Supreme$4.66$5.59+20%
Bean Burrito$2.74$2.99+9%
Burrito Supreme$5.14$5.79+13%
Beefy 5-Layer Burrito$3.94$5.49+39%

Two conflicts to flag rather than hide. This site's own sampled price for the Beefy 5-Layer Burrito is $4.19 (range $3.49–$5.49) — menupriceguide's 2026 figure of $5.49 is the top of that range, not a contradiction. Likewise our sampled Crunchy Taco is $2.09 (range $1.99–$2.49) against their $2.49. Different samples, different stores, same ranges. The pattern that survives the sampling noise is the direction: every item in the table rose, and the "Supreme" items rose fastest — Crunchy Taco Supreme +32% against the plain Crunchy Taco's +23%.

The 1990s: the 59-79-99 menu

The 1990s gap is narrower than it first looked. Taco Bell launched its three-tiered value menu in 1990 — the 59-79-99 menu (Mashed, citing the New York Times) — and Tasting Table's 90s figures for three still-sold items are: a Crunchy Taco at $0.59 (against $1.99 in their "today" figure, and $2.09 sampled on this site), three Soft Taco Supremes at $0.79 each against $2.69 today, and Cinnamon Twists at $0.59 (against $1.49). The 2000s brought the Crunchwrap Supreme (2005) and the steady climb from under-a-dollar tacos to the $2 range. What is still missing is a complete 1990s or 2000s price list — the three items above are the verified figures, not a full menu — and the value menu itself did not disappear: it became the Luxe Value Menu in January 2026, ten items under $3, covered on the value menu page. If a fuller 1990s price list surfaces, this page will be updated with it.

About this guide's data

Every figure in this guide comes from one dataset: sampled Taco Bell prices and published nutrition, compiled and verified in October 2026 (prices are re-checked monthly, and every data page carries its verification stamp). Rankings state their rule in the open and are computed from those rows — never voted on, never estimated. Where a value is missing it is shown as missing, and each named item links to its own page, where the full label, allergen record and sampled price range can be checked. Prices vary by location; nutrition values are the published figures for the standard build.

Frequently asked questions

How much did a Taco Bell taco cost in 1962?

19 cents. Adjusted for inflation that is $2.07 in February 2026 dollars — against a sampled Crunchy Taco price of $2.09 in 2026, so the taco's real price has barely moved in 64 years.

How much have Taco Bell prices gone up since 2024?

Most core items rose 15–30% between 2024 and 2026 (menupriceguide archived comparison): Crunchy Taco +23%, Crunchy Taco Supreme +32%, Beefy 5-Layer Burrito +39%, Bean Burrito +9%.

What did Taco Bell cost in the 90s?

Why do Taco Bell prices differ between sources?

Taco Bell publishes no national price list, so every figure is a sample from different stores. Our sampled Beefy 5-Layer is $4.19 (range $3.49–$5.49); menupriceguide's 2026 figure of $5.49 is the top of that range — different samples, not a contradiction.
